Memory of Space

Leslie Polk

Abstract:

“Memory of Space” began as a lesson on techniques in choreography. “Grab a pen and a piece of paper. Find a spot on the floor to sit, and let’s listen to the music. As the moment leads, begin to write about a place. It can be any place, but something familiar.” These were the instructions in my CW 212 Dance and Movement in/as Practice: Exploration class. As a writer/poet, I leaned into the assignment, recalling a room in my mother’s home, which now serves as an invitation to consider the common good in this life – to maintain and keep it alive – to recall, re-member, and preserve it.

This work was created, developed, and executed under the auspices of a Student Artistic Fellowship at the Movement Lab at the Milstein Center at Barnard College
